Why I am a Poem
The shocking softness of the taste
Of white coffee
Reminds me every morning
That with words alone the character of a warm cup
Can be defined.
They must then also be able to
Define the character
Of crumpled sheets,
Unwashed dishes, and
Empty bottles.
White coffee reminds me every morning
That character matters.
More so than taste, scent or washed hair.
And that a poem with no character
Is a crime against language.
And so every morning,
With a cup of white coffee, I realize anew
That I, too, can be a poem,
As long as I have character.
And so I, too, on a cold autumn morning
Can be someone's
Cup of hot
And slightly too sweet
White coffee.
